On Wednesday 11th May, Accrington Academy Year 8 rugby team attended a tournament at Haslingden High School. It was rugby league rules with the only difference being it was 9 aside. In our first game we played against Alder Grange, they were very well drilled and we exchanged some hefty blows and last ditch try scoring tackles. Everyone in the team was giving 110% in terms of effort and commitment with some people picking up injuries due to the effort they were giving. We opened the scoring with a try from Matthew Gaynor but Alder Grange hit back making it one try a piece. It then became quite a tactical battle between the two teachers/coaches with both teams exchanging tries with Captain Connor Walsh and Daley Outterside producing some excellent combination work to break through the Alder Grange defence and score tries. However, due to some excellent rear guard defensive tackling particularly from Daley Outterside we won the game 5 tries to 4.

In the second game we came up against a very strong Haslingden Team who blew us away with their captain and by the looks of it athletic runner, scoring 4 tries himself. He was too fast and no one could catch him. Once he had broken through the defensive line, he was in the clear and we were struggling to catch him to attempt a tackle. We were also quite tired as we literally had just finished our first game and then were asked to play Haslingden who were yet to play.

In our 3rd and final game we played All Saints. As we wanted to finish the tournament strongly and with a win, we increased the tempo of our play. Again we struck first scoring the first try of the game through Captain Connor Walsh using some quick footwork to elude the tackles and ground the ball. However, All Saints hit back to level the tries at 1 each. Matthew Gaynor then burst over the try line for us to take the lead again, and again All saints levelled the scores before we eventually won the game 4 tries to 3, this meant that we won the game and although everyone was battered and bruised it was a great team effort with everyone giving 100% and came 2nd overall in the tournament which is a great achievement.
