Monday 18th September saw the first event in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Competition calendar – The Hyndburn Kids Cup. In association with Accrington Stanley, ten teams competed for the right to represent Stanley in the next round of the competition.
The event showcased the amount of talented young players in Accrington and the surrounding areas. The teams were split into two groups and each played the other teams in the group. There were strong performances in all groups but St Peter and Pauls, St Nicholas, St Bart’s, St Marys Oswaldtwistle, Huncoat and Belthorn all put in strong performances.
The top two teams went forward to the semi-finals so from group A that was St Peter and Pauls and St Barts (who just beat St Nicholas on goal difference) and from group B. St Marys Oswaldtwistle and Huncoat went through.
The semi-finals were tense affairs and saw St Bartholomew’s beat St Marys Oswaldtwistle and the match against St Peter and Pauls go to penalties against Huncoat, which St Peter and Pauls won.
In the final, St Bartholomew’s beat St Peter and Pauls with a last minute goal and Huncoat and St Marys Oswaldtwistle came joint first. All four schools will be invited back to compete against the top four Ribble Valley schools to represent Accrington Stanley in the next round.
Jane Johnson from the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley School Sports Partnership said “It was fantastic to see the quality of the football on show today. The final games could all have gone either way so the next round of competition will be a competitive event”
