With numbers up on last year and 22 teams entered into the event the year 5&6 Quick Sticks hockey event was sure to be an exciting affair.
The event was officiated by Accrington Academy Students and supported by Blackburn Northern and Clitheroe Hockey club who are keen to welcome new members to their training sessions on a Wednesday 6pm – 7.30pm at Pleckgate High School Blackburn (sticks can be provided).
The teams were split into four groups over six pitches and it was obvious from the start that the schools had been practising hard and that the standard was much improved from last year. All players were also sporting brand new mouth guards after a recent ruling by England Hockey that it is now compulsory for them to be worn in competitive matches.
At the end of the group stages it was the top teams from each group that progressed to the semi finals. This meant that Benjamin Hargreaves played St Marys Langho and St Nicholas played Balderstone. St Nicholas and St Marys Langho won both of their matches which meant that they met in the final and had already won the right to represents their respective boroughs in the L3 school games in July. The final was a competitive affair but St Marys Langho proved to be too strong for St Nicholas and emerged victorious. Benjamin Hargreaves won their match for third place and Balderstone were fourth.
Good luck to St Marys Langho and St Nicholas in the next round of the competition.
