Ribblesdale High school was the venue where 19 schools took part in the annual football competition for year 3 & 4 children. The teams were split into 5 groups with the top placed team qualifying and also the 3 best 2nd placed team from the groups to make it through to the quarter finals. In group A St Leonards Langho and Salesbury B progressed ahead of Mellor and St Michael & St Johns, Group B featured Edisford, St Marys Langho, St Joseph’s Hurst Green and Sabden but it was the team from Langho who qualified with 6 points. Group C was made up of Oakhill, Balderstone, Simonstone and Clitheroe St James with Simonstone qualifying in first place, joining them as one of the best placed 2nd teams were Clitheroe St James. Group D saw Whalley and Salesbury A progress to the quarter finals stage ahead of Pendle and Gisburn, while in group E Waddington & West Bradford progressed ahead of Salesbury C and St Marys Sabden.
The quarter final fixtures saw 8 teams compete for a semi-final place in the competition. Waddington & West Bradford sealed a semi-final spot with a 3-0 victory over Clitheroe St James, Simonstone needed penalties to progress after a 0-0 draw with Salesbury B which they eventually won 3-2, Whalley beat St Leonards Langho 3-0 and St Marys Langho won their spot in the semi-final after a 0-0 draw with Salesbury A winning 3-2 on penalties.
The Semi Finals saw Waddington & West Bradford vs Simonstone in a really close game with the only chance falling to Waddington & West Bradford which they took to win the game 1-0, they would face in the final the winners of Whalley vs St Marys Langho which again would be a very close game ending in a 0-0 draw but
it was Whalley who won the shootout 3-2 to face Waddington in the final leaving Simonstone to face St Marys Langho for third place.
In the third/4th Place game it was another close game with both sides creating chances but it was St Marys Langho who came out on top with a 2-1 victory over Simonstone winning the bronze medals. In the final again it was a close game with both teams having chances but just unable to get that crucial goal with the end result being 0-0 it was down to the dreaded shootout once again which Waddington and West Bradford won 3-2 to win gold medals with Whalley as runners up receiving silver medals.
Thank you to all who attended it was one of the best supported events we have seen, thank you to Ribblesdale for hosting the competition and well done to Waddington & West Bradford who won their first football competition.
