The start of the new academic year is always exciting but made even more so at Accrington Academy as it’s audition time for our annual academy musical! Always a highlight of the year, it involves students from year 7 – 13 both on-stage and backstage. Our students are actively involved in every aspect of staging a full stage musical from performing in the cast, to playing the live music in the band, to running the back-stage props, lighting and sound teams.
This year promises to be another great show, as we journey to Austria for “The Sound of Music”. A classic Rogers and Hammerstein musical, it tells the tale of a young governess, Maria, taking care of seven children. Initially frustrated by their cold, distant father, Captain Von Trapp, she eventually melts his heart as she brings laughter and music back into his house. Set against the backdrop of World War II though, the love story is not a simple happy ever after, as the Nazis invade Austria. Based on a true story, “The Sound of Music” has delighted young and old for generations and we hope our production will do the same.
Before we can start any of that though, we needed to cast the show. Auditions were held in the Drama Studio and as always we had a great turn out, making our job as casting directors even harder and demonstrating once again what a tremendous amount of talent we have at the Academy. The most lovely part is always seeing students who maybe started off when they began at the Academy in Year 7, taking on small roles or working hard in the Chorus, blossoming into leading men and ladies.
The Cast List was published on Monday 12th September and rehearsals began on Thursday 15th September. Our talented cast will put in many hours of work between now and November to ensure a show to remember! Updates on rehearsals and how to get tickets to follow!
