Once again Hyndburn & Ribble Valley school sports partnership would work alongside Accrington Stanley to run two football competitions to determine who will represent their districts in the playoff game held on Saturday 21st January at Accrington Stanley vs Carlisle United.

img_1949The Hyndburn competition would be hosted by Accrington Academy and 12 teams would compete to win. The format would be 4 groups of 3 teams with the top 2 progressing through to the quarter final then semi-final stages before eventually playing in the final. Group A was won by St Bartholomew’s who won both group games while Baxenden finished 2nd and progressed where they would face Moorend in the next round after they won Group B, Peel Park who was 2nd in group B would play St Bartholomew’s. Group C would be a close group with All Saints A topping the group on 4 points with Mount Pleasant on 2 finishing 2nd playing Benjamin Hargreaves in the next round after they won both group games to finish on 6 points ahead of St Marys Oswaldtwistle.

Quarter final stages would see St Bartholomew’s beat Peel Park to progress to the Semi-final stages where they would meet Moorend after they beat Baxenden 3-0, Benjamin Hargreaves beat Mount Pleasant 1-0 to progress to the semi-finals to face St Marys Oswaldtwistle. The semi-final stages was both really close games with both teams playing good football trying to make it too the final. Penalties where required to separate St Bartholomew’s and Moorend which the Great Harwood school won to face St Marys Oswaldtwistle in the final leaving Moorend to face Benjamin Hargreaves for 3rd place. Both the final and the 3rd/4th place playoff game was really close with only 1 goal separating both teams in both games, St Bartholomew’s managed to score to beat St Marys Oswaldtwistle while Moorend finished 3rd after beating Benjamin Hargreaves 1-0.


The Ribble Valley competition was hosted by St Augustine’s High School and would see 11 schools compete to face St Bartholomew’s as Ribble Valley champions. The format would see 2 groups with the top 2 teams progressing to the semi-final stages. From group A it would be Mellor who topped the group on 11 points with Barrow finishing 2nd on 10 points. The rest of the group would see Clitheroe st James get 7 points, St Leonards Langho 6 points, St Michael & St johns 5 points and St Marys Osbaldeston 0 points. Mellor and Barrow progressed to the semi-finals where they would be joined by the top 2 teams from Group B which would be Edisford on 10 points & Salesbury on 7 points the rest of the group would be made up of Oakhill and St Marys Langho both finishing on 4 points and Gisburn finishing on 1 point.

In the semi-finals stage Mellor would face Salesbury and eventually win the game 2-0 thanks too 2 free kicks, while in the other semi-final Edisford cruised to a 2-0 win over Barrow. In the 3rd/4th place playoff game Salesbury would narrowly edge out Barrow 1-0 to finish 3rd. The final would be more one sided than anticipated with Edisford winning the game 3-0.

Edisford will now playoff against St Bartholomew’s on Saturday 21st January at the Accrington Stanley vs. Carlisle United game to see who progresses through to the next round of the kids cup competition.
