Basketball proves to be a popular sport for the schools in Hyndburn & Ribble Valley with 20 schools wanting to take part, this year’s event would be split across 2 venues, Accrington Academy would host along with Oakhill College.
At the Accrington Academy competition Green Haworth, St Bartholomew’s, St Charles x2, West End, St Marys Mellor, Benjamin Hargreaves x2 , St Marys Clayton, Simonstone and Peel Park x2 would all be in attendance to try and slam dunk their way to victory. The format allowed 4 players to be on court at a time with players earning 2 points for baskets scored and 1 point if the ball hit the rim of the basket. On the night some fantastic basketball skills where demonstrated with some great passing, dribbling and shooting being performed during the games. However it was St Charles who finished first beating St Bartholomew’s in the final, Peel Park finished 3rd
Attending the 2nd competition being held at Oakhill college where the hosts Oakhill x2, Whalley, Sabden and Grindleton. The same rules applied which encouraged the same levels of skill during the games. The competition was a close one but it was Oakhill who received bronze medals, for 2nd and 1st there was a tie as Grindleton and Sabden tied on points, a count back of points scored in all the games played would be used to determine the winners, this would see Sabden take 2nd place with 13 points scored, while Grindleton finished 1st with a massive 32 points scored.
Congratulations to all winners and a massive well done to everyone who took part in this year’s competition. Some fantastic basketball was played on both nights. Thank you to Lancashire Spinners Basketball Club for officiating and showing of some skills to inspire the participants at the Accrington academy competition and thank you to the Oakhill students for officiating the competition at Oakhill.
