Myself, Lewis Ware and Joshua Chadwick completed table tennis officiating as part of our A-Level PE course. We firstly learned the signals and pre-match checks which needed to be done correctly to be an effective official. We then officiated the Year 8 inter-college table tennis competition; this was very rewarding and I believe we as sixth form students were respected and seen as role models by the younger students.

As part of the course we needed to officiate at a competitive event. We volunteered at the Year 7/8 inter-schools Hyndburn Table Tennis competition held at Hyndburn Sports Centre. We each officiated 5 games which ran successfully and smoothly and we were able to show off our confidence and authority as an official.

Completing the officiating as part of my A-level PE course has helped me develop my leadership and confidence. Having a skill such as this is also very unique and shows that we are willing to learn and understand different sports.

Another of the students, Josh Chadwick, commented, “Officiating at the Hyndburn Table Tennis competition was a good opportunity in developing my ability to officiate in a different environment other than school. I would like to continue officiating and playing the sport after the course as I find it rewarding and enjoyable.”
