What is Catch Up Premium?

Literacy and Numeracy Catch-up Premium is additional funding provided to schools by the government to help support students to ‘catch up’ in English and Maths. Funding is provided for each Year 7 student who has not achieved level 4 in reading and/or maths at Key Stage 2 to provide additional tuition or intensive support in small groups, giving students valuable support to bring them up to speed so that they are more likely to succeed at secondary school.

It is down to schools to decide how the funding is spent to best support their students needs, however, It is expected that it will be used to deliver additional literacy and numeracy catch-up during Year 7 as evidence shows that this can make a critical difference to students at this important stage of their educational journey.

In the 2015/16 Academic Year the Accrington Academy received £17,500 of Catch Up Premium Funding for 35 of its 202 students in year 7.

How does the Academy plan to spend the Catch Up Premium?

The Academy uses Catch up premium to support students in accelerating their progress in English and Maths.   This is achieved in a number of ways including:

  • Transition days –  Hosting a week long induction for year 6 pupils prior to starting at the Academy the next academic year.
  • Summer schools – All Year 6 pupils who will become the new year 7 cohort are invited to take part in a Summer School Programme aimed at getting up to speed in Numeracy and Literacy, building relationships, confidence building and team work skills.

  • Development of Literacy and Numeracy resources used in tutorial time and in catch up programmes
  • Continue the development of HUB + Provision.
